Consumerization empowering enterprise mobile users

For some time, IT managers dreaded the day when employees would use their own devices for business. However, Fierce Content Management editor Ron Miller believes that consumerization of enterprise mobility is an inevitability, and it's now up to management to take the necessary measures to ensure programs are successful.

Most enterprise IT experts support mobile expense management solutions as a method of ensuring costs are kept under control. However, other IT management software is key to preventing mobile deployments from interfering with operations too heavily.

Miller points to the integration of content management solutions as a step most companies should take. Using content management allows for proper organization and access to information employees must access from their mobile devices. Given the difficulty some have adjusting to new mobile devices, especially while trying to accomplish business-critical tasks, consumerization will allow these workers to use the handset they're most comfortable with.

Ultimately, with enterprise mobility, making it as simple as possible for employees to be productive while away from the office is the goal. The easiest way to achieve this, experts say, is to let people use the smartphone they're most comfortable with.

With some around the office on the iPhone and others relying on Android-powered devices, mobile device management is critical. Rather than providing soft guidelines for data use and web access, MDM tracks the employee's activity and organizes information so administrators can be as proactive as possible in their decision-making. However, being too strict with data requirements - especially for an employee who is using the device properly - can stifle productivity.

There are certainly problems presented by consumerization that MDM solutions cannot solve. While most expense-related issues will be avoided, productivity and effectiveness are at least as important. According to Miller, as mobile technology advances and more companies turn to in-house IT workers to develop and tailor apps to their employees' needs, these problems will fade. At the moment, though, it can be difficult to optimize productivity while supporting several different mobile operating systems. With this in mind, the value of content management becomes even more apparent to formalize the format and structure of newly produced data.

In terms of managing expenses, the key seems to be advising employees from burning through data limitations with mindless tasks. According to a new report from Pew Research, 42 percent of mobile phone users turn to their handsets when they're bored.
