What is MDM - Mobile Device Management?
“It’s completely out of control!” That’s the refrain coming out of IT departments more and more frequently these days.
What’s the Problem?
They’re talking about the explosion that has occurred in the inventory of mobile devices that IT departments have to monitor and manage.
- Over 40 types of Android-based phones from six (6) different manufacturers
- A new iPhone or iPad model each year from 2007 to 2011
- Over 60 types of Blackberries & host of other devices based on Symbian, Windows & WebOS
Plus, the world of business communications is on a one-way path towards mobility solutions that bring with them a wide variety of security issues. But the flexibility and productivity gains that come with mobile communications and data access cannot be dismissed by any enterprise that wants to remain competitive.
And of course small hand-held phones are easily lost. In addition, roaming charges, international fees, and unrestrained directory assistance charges add to management headaches.
So, we have these three things: the mobile device market exploding, mobility encroaching ever further into business, and the incursion of sometimes massive charges for very specific services.
That’s the problem.
Mobile Device Management (MDM)
MDM gives an enterprise the power to address this mobility management problem. It does this in basically two ways:
- It delivers the muscle to remotely control security settings.
- It ingeniously uses technology to tame overly expensive services on mobile devices.
What does that mean exactly?
On the Security side, Amtel’s MDM solution includes the following security capabilities:
- Remote over-the-air (OTA) enrollment of Smartphones: Install Provisioning Profiles / Applications, Email server settings, Feature restrictions, WiFi settings, Password policies
- Monitor Installed applications, Approved applications, Restricted applications
- Monitor Device Information and Status: IMEI, SIM, Network Information, Free RAM, Battery level, Platform name
- Remote Wipe and Remote Lock: Initiate this command to set factory defaults or non-operational status
- GPS Tracking: Track time and location coordinates
- Notifications: Real Time Notifications to Network Administrators for Exceptions
- Reporting: Role -based Summary & Detail Reporting
On the Cost-saving usage side, Amtel’s platform delivers the following applications:
- International Roaming Alerts: Real Time Alerts to Network Administrator for International Roaming charges
- 411 Directory Assistance Saving: Avoid expensive directory assistance calls up to $1.99 per call
- International Calls Saving: Avoid high Mobile International calling rates.
Do you need MDM?
A “yes” answer to any of the following questions means your enterprise can benefit from a mobile device management solution:
- Are you dealing with issues of mobile security?
- Are you facing high international calling charges?
- Are your users using 411 Directory Assistance?
- Are your users travelling internationally without roaming plans?
- Is your enterprise seeing a growing number of employee-owned mobile devices that are not secure?
- Does the mix of mobile device types at your enterprise grow more complex by the month?
With a good MDM platform, you can change the refrain coming out of your IT department from “It’s completely out of control” to “Wow, that’s a lot better.”
